Madrigalchor Aachen e.V. was founded in 1978 and today comprises around 30 enthusiastic singers. Under the direction of its founder, Johannes Meister – who later became choir director at the Vienna State Opera – the choir initially performed secular and sacred choral music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods with a small ensemble, before increasing the number of members and expanding its repertoire to include Romantic and modern choral music. The choir quickly made a name for itself within Aachen’s diverse choral scene and won first and second prizes at international competitions. This was followed by radio recordings for the BBC, Danish Radio, KRO (Netherlands) and WDR. Regular concert tours have taken the choir to Denmark, England, Estonia, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy and Singapore, amongst other places. The Madrigalchor Aachen was also one of the founding choirs of the first Internationale Chorbiennale Aachen festival in 2009.
In July 2025, Andrea Jacobs took over as director of Madrigalchor Aachen, with the aim of continuing to develop its blend of contemporary and Baroque music.
